1. Start with the task
A reading chair, kitchen bench and video-call desk need different light. Identify the place and time you want to improve. A lamp beside the task may be more useful than trying to make the whole room brighter.
2. Check the power connection
Read the exact product specification. A decorative pendant photographed in a room is not necessarily a plug-in product. Match voltage, plug and local electrical requirements. Fixed-wiring changes need the proper permission and a suitably qualified professional.
3. Plan the cable route
Put the lamp close to a suitable outlet. Keep cords clear of water, heat, chair wheels and walkways. Follow the ratings and instructions for any power strip and avoid daisy-chaining adapters to solve a layout problem.
4. Compare brightness and colour
Lumens describe light output; colour temperature describes the appearance of the light. Look for the actual specification rather than a vague warm or bright label. Shade material and direction also change how the room feels.
5. Check bulb compatibility
Match socket type, physical dimensions and the fixture rating. A dimmable bulb needs a compatible control. A smart bulb may require a particular app, network or hub, so check those requirements before buying.
6. Think about stability
Choose a base and position appropriate for children, pets and narrow spaces. Keep shades clear of materials according to the instructions. A light attached using adhesive has its own load and surface restrictions.
7. Keep the original parts
Label and store any original bulbs you replace if they belong to the property. Check whether fittings are landlord-provided before changing them. At move-out, restore only what your agreement requires and keep the portable pieces you bought.
Your next step
Draw a simple room plan with sockets and the three places where you need light most. Compare portable products for those positions, then check power, size, brightness, bulb inclusion and returns on the local supplier page.
